It’s remarkable how many of us return to our roots. The things we were
passionate about when we were younger somehow resurface later in life.
I started out wishing to be a dancer, but was always much better at the
warms-ups than the choreography. The stretches and powerful, yet
graceful, moves of dance were my forte. Spending time with dancers, I
learned about and began to practice Pilates – the secret behind the
long, lean dancer physique. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s,
the Pilates method of exercise focuses on strengthening the core
muscles, increasing flexibility and connecting the mind and body.
After more than a decade in the fitness industry, teaching aerobics,
personal training and owning a fitness club in the Back Bay, I found
myself drawn back to Pilates. I wanted to devote my time to training my
clients in mind/body fitness. After all the pounding from high-intensity
aerobics, Pilates felt better for my body.
I have long had a vision of a center where clients, especially women,
could exercise in a serene and comfortable atmosphere. In February 2002,
we opened the Boston Body Pilates, Yoga and Healing Arts Center in
Newtonville and in November 2002, we moved our Back Bay location to
Newbury St. In 2008, we opened our third location in Belmont and
introduced our Core for Kids program- Pilates and Yoga for kids of all
ages. I think of Boston Body as a place to replenish. We all lead such busy
lives; it’s essential to nourish our bodies and minds just to keep up
the pace.
I invite you to join us and take time just for you.
Try a yoga class, sign up for a private Pilates session, or enjoy our
Group Equipment classes.
Most importantly, get quiet. Reconnect your mind and body, make new
friends and, who knows, maybe rediscover some old passions in the
process.
